APPLICATION FOR A

LIONEL MURPHY FOUNDATION

POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

Terms & Conditions of Lionel Murphy Postgraduate Scholarships

(1) A number of Australian and overseas postgraduate scholarships are awarded annually by the Trustees of the Lionel Murphy Foundation. These scholarships are known as the Lionel Murphy Australian Postgraduate Scholarships, or the Lionel Murphy Overseas Postgraduate Scholarships, as the case may be. The precise number in each category, and the method of payment, is determined by the Trustees in their absolute discretion.

(2) The Australian scholarships are tenable at an Australian tertiary institution for one year only and are currently valued at $20,000 each per annum. The overseas scholarships are tenable at an overseas tertiary institution for one year only, and are currently valued at $40,000 each per annum.

(3) Applicants must be Australian citizens, or permanent residents who have been granted permanent residency by 31 October of the year prior to this application AND have lived in Australia for previous 12 months.

 

(4) Applicants should have completed, or be about to complete, an undergraduate degree in science, law or legal studies, or other appropriate discipline from an Australian tertiary institution, and intend to pursue a postgraduate degree in science, law or legal studies, or other appropriate discipline.

(5) Preference is given to applicants who propose to study any, or all, of the following:

 

(a)

The law and the legal system in a social context and their practical application;

(b)

Science and/or the law as a means of attaining social justice and human rights and as vehicles for change;

(c)

International law as a developing force for peace and as a means of achieving the rule of law in all nations.

(d)

Science as a tool for social benefit, particularly in meeting the needs of those most disadvantaged within society.

(e)

Other disciplines, where the proposed nature and area of study are likely to promote the goals of social justice and benefit for the disadvantaged.

 

 

(6) Scholars are required to give regular interim progress reports and to provide a full report to the Lionel Murphy Foundation on completion of their studies, of their work and other activities undertaken as a Lionel Murphy Scholar.

(7) Scholars understand that the receipt of another scholarship, award, funding, or the acceptance of paid employment, may lead to the reduction or withdrawal of the Lionel Murphy Scholarship, and to the obligation to repay moneys to the Foundation, and that such decision will be at the absolute discretion of the Trustees of the Lionel Murphy Foundation.

(8) Scholars are expected and encouraged to publish the results of their studies, and to acknowledge in such publication/s the support of the Lionel Murphy Foundation.

(9) Scholarships are offered subject to confirmation of acceptance of the terms and conditions attaching to the scholarship, and subject to there being no alteration to:

1.     your study plans, particularly your course focus;

2.     the subject of your research and/or thesis; 

3.     your intended place/s of study; 

4.     your financial circumstances; 

as stated in your application for the postgraduate scholarship.    

 

 

NOTES TO APPLICANTS FOR A LIONEL MURPHY POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

 

These notes will assist you in preparing your application, as well as determining your eligibility to submit an application for a Lionel Murphy Postgraduate Scholarship.

Applications must be typed. Faintly typed applications (which would be illegible when copied), or handwritten applications, will not be accepted. It is acceptable to reproduce the exact format of this application form on your own computer, if necessary.

A minimum of three references, preferably academic, must be submitted with the application. Failure to enclose three references with the application will render the application ineligible for consideration.

Photocopies of academic results, and birth certificates, Australian passports, naturalisation certificates or residency visas must be legible and must be certified as true copies of originals by a JP or equivalent. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS!

Applicants must answer all questions and, if necessary, append additional pages in the same format.

Trustees will give low priority to applications from:

1.

Applicants who are established professional full-time academics;

2.

Applicants who are established full-time professional legal persons;

3.


Applicants with other means from which to finance their own post-graduate studies.

NOTE:



Applications for assistance with travel expenses will not be considered and the Foundation will not entertain requests for supplementation from its funds for scholarships after they have been granted. Applications for scholarships where no institution is involved will not be considered.

APPLICATIONS CLOSE 1ST SEPTEMBER. NO LATE OR INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. HOWEVER, YOU MAY ADVISE EXAMINATION RESULTS WHICH YOU RECEIVE AFTER THE CLOSING DATE. FAXED COPIES OF APPLICATIONS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
